David Lee Roth's Comeback Trail
Stops At Under The Rail Tonight
Jul 8, 1994

Recent times have been pretty rough for (Diamond) David Lee Roth, former lead singer of Van Halen. In 1985 he had a meteoric, chart-scorching solo EP, "Crazy From The Heat," and had parted with his longtime band. But his brightly burning solo career quickly novaed.
Although he used some of the finest hired-gun-guitarists he could find, he never rediscovered the on-stage chemistry he had with Eddie Van Halen. Roth also put out a series of lackluster albums. And to add insult to injury, last year he got popped for possession of pot in New York City, his current home. What happened to the shining son of Pasadena, Calif.?
Well, he's turned his two-year NYC sojourn into a new album, "Your Filthy Little Mouth," and has hit the road. He plays tonight at Under The Rail. It's not exactly the Coliseum; in fact the Rail probably more resembles the Starwood in David Hollywood where Van Halen got discovered (only not quite as glamorous). But he should still have room to move.
Dave's new record was slickly produced by Nile Rodgers, and while there's plenty of material that harkens back to Van Halen, it does have a Right Coast veneer: shiny but smoky with just enough flies stuck in the shellac. Expect Roth to be just as rambunctious on stage as he's always been. He can't help himself.
